I sit Dr Kubheka down to take some portraits in his room at the doctors quarters within the grounds of Madadeni Public Hospital near Newcastle, South Africa. He takes his glasses off and he wipes his eyes, to me this epitomises his tiredness which he rarely shows and I rarely see in my time spent with him. “After the on-call (up to 24 hours) shift I am very tired, but I don’t sleep during my shift, I eat and drink and stay awake, while others are sleeping.”
